Telephone follow-up for patients with abdominal wall hernias: a narrative review.

Abstract

Introduction and objectives: Telemedicine can facilitate continuity of care. Given that telephone follow-up for abdominal wall conditions has been sparsely described in the scientific literature, the objective is to review telephone follow-up for patients with abdominal wall hernias.

Materials and methods: A narrative review of published studies regarding telephone follow-up for patients with abdominal wall hernias. The search was conducted in the Cochrane Library, Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, and ScienceDirect databases. Articles were selected if they involved follow-up conducted exclusively by telephone (excluding mail, video, or software applications). Presentations, conference papers, abstracts, reviews and articles analyzing conditions other than abdominal wall hernias were excluded. The literature search covered the period from 1990 to 2023.

Results: Of the 27 articles involving telephone follow-up, only 10 studies specifically analyzed the safety and efficacy of this method. In the remaining 17 studies, telephone follow-up was not the specific subject of analysis but rather a tool used to assess outcomes. The analysis covered the questionnaires used to detect complications, assess postoperative pain, and identify recurrences, as well as comparisons between in-person and telephone follow-up and patient satisfaction.

Conclusions: Although telephone follow-up for patients with abdominal wall hernias appears safe and feasible, further scientific evidence is needed to establish firm conclusions and recommendations.

Keywords: hernia, abdominal wall hernia, telephone follow-up.
